Medical Education

Applicants must have a medical degree from a medical school which is recognized in Canada. 

NOTE: This requirement is updated as per the Government of Alberta website.

NOTE: As of July 1, 2025, Canadians graduating from non-CACMS-accredited schools will be considered IMGs for the CaRMS 2026 cycle. Please refer to CaRMS and AFMC for the most up-to-date eligibility details..

All applicants must meet one of the following criteria

To check whether a medical school is recognized in Canada, locate the school in the World Directory of Medical Schools, and click on the Sponsor Notes tab. A note for “Canada” indicates that the medical school is recognized in Canada.

It is the responsibility of the applicant to verify that the diploma-granting medical school meets the requirements stated above.

Applicants who cannot share their medical degree with the AIMG Program, via their PhysiciansApply account by the main supporting documents deadline June 6, 2025

Please upload one of the following by the main supporting documents deadline:

  • A letter from the Dean of their medical school on official stationery, confirming that their degree is expected to be conferred by July 1, 2026, in their supporting documents upload.
AND/OR
  • A copy of their MCC NAC Student Attestation, signed by the Dean of their medical school, stating their expected date of graduation.

NOTE: If there is difficulty obtaining either of these documents, refer to the Administrative Exception process.

Applicants who have graduated by December 31, 2025

Deadline: January 21, 2026
Please note that while the application deadline is January 21st, applicants are requested to submit an official copy of their medical degree and complete the verification process as soon as possible to expedite processing.
All documentation is required by July 1st, 2026.

Upon receipt of their official medical degree, please:

  • Ensure their official medical degree is housed within PhysiciansApply.
  • Share access with the AIMG Program by the deadline.
  • Communicate directly with PhysiciansApply to expedite source verification indicating a status of "Reviewed and Accepted".
  • *This status MUST be achieved.

If you are experiencing delays, please immediately email the AIMG Program at aimg@ucalgary.ca.

Applicants who have graduated by July 1, 2026

Deadline: July 1, 2026
Upon receipt of their official medical degree, please:

  • Ensure their official medical degree is housed within PhysiciansApply.
  • Share access with the AIMG Program by the deadline.
  • Communicate directly with PhysiciansApply to expedite source verification indicating a status of "Reviewed and Accepted".
  • *This status MUST be achieved.

If you are experiencing delays, please immediately email the AIMG Program at aimg@ucalgary.ca.

Important: Shared access to their PhysiciansApply account and all required cycle documents must remain active with the AIMG Program until the 2026 residency start date. Failure to meet these requirements may result in ineligibility.

Important Announcements

Effective as of March 24, 2025 and announced by the Government of Alberta: For the 2026 application cycle, applicants will be eligible if they graduate by July 1, 2026.
